Want
to help bring arts and arts education to California communities and schools?
Contribute to the Arts Council Fund on your annual state tax return! Look for
the Arts Council Fund in the “contributions” section. Thousands of children and
millions of Californians can benefit from arts education and local arts through
the state’s arts agency. Help get the word out by including ads promoting this
program on your website, e-newsletters and printed event program. Electronic
art is available at http://www.cac.ca.gov/getinvolved/taxcheckoff.php.
Join the Million
Plates Campaign for the Arts:
Support California Arts By Buying An Arts License Plate at Artsplate.org
The Million Plates Campaign for the Arts is
working to raise $40 million in new funding for over 300 arts programs in
California schools and communities through the sale of the California Arts
License Plate. The Santa Barbara County
Arts Commission has joined the California Arts Council (CAC), regional arts
councils, local organizers, and campaign partners in this crucial campaign to
persuade one million California drivers to purchase an Arts License Plate.
The state of California currently ranks dead last in per capita arts funding,
spending a mere 22 cents per person on arts education. A re-commitment to the arts through the sale
of one million Arts Plates would take the Golden State from last to near the
top.
The arts are essential to our state, especially
in these difficult economic times.
California’s economy relies on creative minds, artistic organizations
and innovative workers. The Million
Plates Campaign for the Arts empowers every Californian to fund the arts in
their schools and communities and ensure that crucial programs receive the
steady support they deserve.
The plate’s image titled “Coastline” was created
in 1993 by legendary California artist Wayne Thiebaud. The plate has raised over $20 million for
California arts since its debut in 1994.
If you do not have an Arts Plate, you can easily
purchase standard plates online through the DMV for $50. Personalized plates cost $98.
If you have one already, tell your friends,
neighbors, and local businesses with fleets of vehicles (they’re tax
deductible!).

Gina
Werfel / POLYPHONICS
Wednesday
. February 1st . 6-8pm
Jane Deering
Gallery
128 E.
Canon Perdido Street . Santa Barbara CA

Jane Deering Gallery will show Gina Werfel’s solo
exhibition, Polyphonics
January 31 to March 4, 2012
Werfel’s works are poetic, even dreamlike,
depictions of nature that emerge from the collaboration of
the playful imagination and the discipline eye
and hand, and attain their own reality.
DeWitt Cheng
from the catalogue ‘Gina Werfel: Persistence
of Vision’ . March 2011
Developing from her
earlier plein-air work, Werfel’s recent paintings consider natural
forces through a delicate balance between figuration and abstraction. The oil
on canvas and works on paper display deconstructed landforms with energized
figures pulsing through them. Energetic paint strokes and merging color washes
evoke the transitory instability of the landscape we inhabit. Elsewhere,
diagonal marks lead the eye into fragile webs of color from which can be
gleaned the artist’s local verdant landscape of northern California and recent
stays in France and Italy. Werfel transports the viewer through urban sprawl,
leafy foliage and towards the calm waters of the Mediterranean by means of
wide, loose brushstrokes and atmospheric color. The paintings combine the
sun-drenched lighting and colorful richness of the Venetian School with the
bold, evocative mark making of the Abstract Expressionists to present
renderings of fragmentary, chaotic spaces.
The title of the
exhibition makes reference to the musicality that emerges from the paintings.
In a fashion reminiscent of Kandinsky, Werfel’s patterns of juxtaposing colors
and shapes link to musical arrangements. The paintings contain both lyricism
and spontaneity; abstractions emerge from the canvas like jazz improvisations.
Works such as Dancer present the human figure in motion, interacting
with the surrounding landscape. The human and nature at times dissolve and
intermix in dynamic sequences of paint. Werfel’s work continually brings the
viewer back to the matter of boundaries: between figuration and abstraction,
order and chaos, nature and human.
Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the
harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings.
The artist is the hand that plays, touching
one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.
Wassily Kandinsky
Gina Werfel is Professor
of Art at UC Davis and was Chair of the Art and Art History Department from
2000-2005. She holds an MFA in painting from Columbia University, New
York and has exhibited nationally since 1980. She is the recipient of numerous
awards and fellowships.

“Repeat Performance!!”
“Art of
Collage with Karen Browdy ”
Weekend
Workshop Retreat: Feb. 24,25,26
It's a
retreat art lovers can dream about... Imagine being nestled into a quiet,
secluded 25 acre vineyard (Foxhound Wines) estate, Rancho Alamo Camp 1,
surrounded by redwood, oak, and cypress trees. Here, the group of 6 will
retreat and eat and wine taste. We'll be
creating with “collage/assemblage guru,” Karen Browdy just minutes away at The
C Gallery. The group stays in the 3 bedrooms on the
separate wing of the 1938 California Ranch main house, 2 to a room.
After a Friday evening progressive dinner,
including an estate wine tasting, and “getting started” class, participants
will enjoy a Saturday of collage making at The C Gallery's intimate
studio. Wine tasting, good eating, and a slow pace are woven into the 4-session
retreat. The final session, Sunday morning, is an informal showing and
commentary of the completed collages at an outdoor gourmet breakfast prepared
by Rancho Alamo's proprietress, Natalie Werk, a culinary artist.
Karen
Browdy, mixed
media artist, is represented by the John Nichols Gallery at the Santa Paula
Museum of Art, and has been a member of
the art faculty at Santa Barbara City College's Continuing Education Division,
in collage, assemblage, and mixed media.
She teaches in her Fillmore studio,
and at the Bell Arts Studio 35.

Patrick Turner “Quiet Light”
Architectural Foundation Gallery
1st Thursday Reception: February 2, 5-8
pm
The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara (AFSB)
celebrates a solo exhibition of photographs by Patrick Turner, entitled “Quiet
Light”. You are invited to attend a 1st Thursday reception
with the artist on February 2nd from 5-8 pm. AFSB is pleased
to collaborate with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization for the 1st
Thursday festivities. The exhibition continues through the month of
February 2012.
Patrick Turner captures softly illuminated landscapes
and seascapes that reveal sculpted trees, rock formations and architectural
elements in slightly mysterious, dream like sequences. The artist
explores the natural world with a thoughtful appreciation for silence and
persistence in his black and white photographs. A selection of Turner’s
exquisite editioned prints from the series “Quiet Light” is on display at the
gallery, representing both traditional film and digital techniques. Using
an advanced technique involving carbon-pigment inks, the artist is able to
produce subtle tonalities previously associated with platinum printing.
The essence of specific places is portrayed through an exploration of
light and shadow, informed by a contemporary sensibility.
The Architectural Foundation Gallery is located in the
historic Acheson House on the corner of Garden and Victoria Streets in Santa
Barbara. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 2
pm, and by appointment. The gallery entrance is on Garden Street
and is accessible by ramp. For more information please call (805)
965-6307. We look forward to seeing you!

“LEARN TO SPEAK FLUENT NATURE
WITH FRED AND LARRY” – OFFERED BY THE WILDLING ART MUSEUM
Los Olivos, CA ~ The Wildling Art
Museum is offering the next “Learn to speak fluent nature” class, Saturday,
February 18, from 9:00-11:30 a.m. Join esteemed local naturalists Dr. Fred
Emerson and botanist Larry Ballard for an enjoyable and informative morning
learning about the natural history of the Santa Ynez Valley at the Santa Ynez
River Estuary. This estuary features an extensive coastal salt marsh, a rare
habitat in California. Typically dominated by Pickleweed, the class will see a
number of other plants that are well adapted to tidal flooding. The area is
also home to a bird species of special concern, the Belding's Savannah Sparrow.
A large stand of Giant Coreopsis grows on the nearby bluffs, and the adjacent
estuary usually supports a variety of wintering ducks and other waterfowl. The
class will walk about a mile along the entrance road to visit all of these
areas.
Both Fred and Larry have extensive knowledge to share in a warm and
friendly way that is easily understood by budding naturalists. Classes will
continue in 2012 on the third Saturday of each month with field classes at the
Los Alamos County Park, Rancho La Vina, and La Purisima Mission. For more
information please go to the Wildling’s website: www.wildlingmuseum.org
or call 805-686-8315 to sign up. Each field class is $25 for non-members and
$20 for members of the museum. Pre-registration is strongly recommended as
class size is limited, so book early to reserve a spot!
The Wildling Art Museum offers visitors a
unique perspective on the importance of preserving our natural heritage.
Through the eyes of artists and interpretive materials, guests can renew their
relationship with the wilderness through art and understand its fragile nature
- hopefully leaving more committed toward ensuring those spaces remain for
future generations. Normal hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m.-5:00
p.m., the Museum offers 3 major exhibitions each year, 8-10 smaller
exhibitions, a gift shop, a variety of programming, and Saturday morning
children’s craft classes. For more information, please visit 2928 San Marcos
Avenue, Los Olivos, or www.wildlingmuseum.org

2012 Kids Draw
Architecture Sketch Session at the Santa Barbara Bowl
February 11 from
1-3 pm, 1122 North Milpas Street
The Architectural
Foundation is pleased to announce the first of our annual Kids Draw
Architecture sketch sessions for 2012. On Saturday, February 11, KDA will
visit the Santa Barbara Bowl for the first time ever. Originally built in
1936 as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project,
the Santa Barbara Bowl has recently undergone renovations that transformed it
into a state of the art concert venue, while
retaining its natural and historic character.
The sketch session
is free and drawing materials will be provided. The award-winning Kids Draw
Architecture program was developed by the Architectural Foundation of Santa
Barbara to enrich our community’s awareness of the built environment.
Young people are encouraged to sketch our architectural landmarks, guided by
local architects and artists. All are welcome to participate!
Celebrating a
tradition of over twenty years, the Kids Draw Architecture program brings
together professional architects and artists to sketch significant buildings
with Santa Barbara County youth. KDA T-shirts and a limited number of
2012 Kids Draw Architecture calendars featuring the children’s drawings will be
available for purchase. Please call 805-965-6307 for further information.

Welcome to my
quarterly e-newsletter! I recently realized that even though I am
a social networking fiend and am everywhere I can be online sharing my
artwork and mosaic news, not everyone I know is on these social
networking sites and therefore not getting my updates on my mosaic
adventures. Since I started creating mosaics in 2005, my business
has increasingly grown and I’m excited about the new opportunities and
possibilities that have come my way, especially in the past year.
If you would rather not receive my e-newsletter, feel free to safely
unsubscribe below, but I hope you will find it interesting and fun
and even forward it to others you think might like what I am doing.
:)
My Children’s Book
My current project is a children’s book illustrated with
my stained glass mosaics. I started the book about 2 ˝ years ago
and am getting very close to finishing! I have so far created 11
mosaics and have only 3 or 4 more to go. I anticipate the book
going to print this summer. I will be making announcements when
it is ready, including in my newsletter, but if you’d like to receive a
postcard in the mail with an image from the book on it, either email me
with your mailing address or go to my blog to sign up (scroll down to the
mailing list form on the right hand side). My blog is also the
primary way I share photos and news on my book and is updated
regularly, so if you’d like to read more details or see more photos of
the book in progress, please visit my blog! Here are a couple of detailed
shots from the book.
Can you help me?
Once the book is printed, I will be having an art show
which will include all of the mosaics in the book, as well as a book
signing. I am working now on finding a place to do this sometime
around November or December of this year. I am looking into the art
galleries in downtown Santa Barbara, hoping to show in one near
Paseo Nuevo Shopping Center (since the show will be near
Christmas!). It's too bad Borders closed, isn't it? but I
will be contacting Chaucer's for a book signing. For you locals,
do you know of any galleries that would be a good fit for my
work? Or does anyone have any ideas of a non-gallery location
that I could have my exhibit at? I am trying to avoid a costly
show, so please keep that in mind. :) I appreciate any and
all suggestions you might have. Thanks!

A couple more details from my book.
Large Community Project!
At the end of this month, I will be traveling to
Lexington, KY for the annual Society of American Mosaic Artists
Conference (SAMA). Last summer I was asked
to lead the mosaic marathon at this year’s conference and have been
preparing for it since. The marathon is two days of
conference-goers creating a mosaic for a local charity, in this case,
Lexington’s not-for-profit organization, The Nest: Center for Women,
Children & Families. I will be leading the SAMA
members in creating a triptych from my designs that will then hang in
the lobby of The Nest. This will be my first community led mosaic
as well as my largest mosaic created so far, and I’m so excited and
grateful for this opportunity. I will share lots of photos and
details in my next newsletter, but for now, here are my designs.
The sky will be a periwinkle color.

Awesome Opportunity at Local Goleta
Cottage Hospital
About a year and a half ago I responded to a call to
artists for artwork to be purchased and installed at the Cottage
Hospitals in Santa Barbara and Goleta, CA, both currently being rebuilt
and expanded. Over 400 artists submitted proposals and my work was
selected to move forward into the design phase! I can’t tell you
how excited I am at the prospect of having my artwork installed at my
local hospital! In early communication I was told my work was
specifically being considered for the Goleta location. Further
communication has been sporadic, probably due to construction taking
longer than planned. Good news, however! The most recent
email informed me that they are about three months away from doing the
art for the Goleta campus, so hopefully I will have more exciting
details to share in my next newsletter! You can see some of the
artwork that was acquired for the Santa Barbara campus here.
My Newest Work
My most recent mosaic was created for the mosaic
salon at the upcoming SAMA conference
where it will hopefully be sold to the highest bidder! The original
design was of the cat playing with a ball, but when I started adding
the spots to the cat, I thought it would be fun to have one of his
spots falling off. It is 7 3/4 x 8" and is titled "Now
How Did That Happen?"

Other Artists I Enjoy
I love viewing art (I collect it, too) and so I want to
share in my newsletters other artists I enjoy. Last month I
joined The Santa Barbara Art Crawl, a group that gets together for the 1st Thursday Art & Music walk in
downtown Santa Barbara. While I saw some gorgeous art and visited
some of my favorite galleries, a stand out for me was The Project Fine Art Zone, a collaborative,
non-profit art gallery owned and operated by nine local artists.
I loved the atmosphere, the happy band, and it was very impressive how
nine distinct artists could create a show that worked so well
together. I loved all of the work, but my favorite artist there
was Erika Carter. Here are a couple
of her wonderful paintings. The next 1stThursday event is
February 2nd. Come out and join me!

Do You Want to Learn the Art of
Mosaic?
When I first
started creating mosaics in 2005, there were no local classes to learn
from, so I taught myself. Now, there is an actual school!
Founded by my friend Tami Macala in 2009, The Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art
offers weekend workshops as well as open lab where you can work on your
project with Tami’s assistance. She is lots of fun and knows her
stuff!! She also has visiting artists, including one of my
favorites, Martin Cheek, who will be there this
month, and my buddy, the fabulous Susan Crocenzi who will be there in
September. Check out Tami's web site for her class
schedule. If you do sign up for a class, let me know because I
love to drop by her workshops, especially if I know my friends will be
there, or I can meet new ones! If you do not live in or near
Santa Barbara and are interested in taking a mosaic class, drop me an
email as I may be able to recommend an instructor near you.
Fountain by Tami Macala
Thank you for reading my newsletter and I hope you enjoyed it!
Warm regards, until next time,

WHAT'S NEW
FOR 1st THURSDAY THIS
WEEK, Sullivan Goss will
present the first solo exhibition for ZACK PAUL - ZACK PAUL:
INSIDE OUT. Zack brings a tradition for geometric abstraction
from his native Buenos Aires, infuses it with the cool of California Hard
Edge painting from the 60s, adds a twist of critical theory, and serves it up
as something new.
The gallery will also
feature DYNAMIC DUOS
- an exhibition of ten pairs of paintings. Each staff member selected two
pairs of paintings and wrote about why they chose them. The resulting show is
very lively.
THE DRAWINGS
OF LEON DABO drew a glowing review
from Charles Donelan of the Independent. Come see one of the
gallery's most special installations.
JON FRANCIS:
Paintings from the Drive Home continues to be a hit with
vintage car lovers. Come find out why.
The new installation of

Valentine's Day 2012:
An Affair to Remember
Join Opera Santa
Barbara on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2012, for An Affair to
Remember in the Loggia Ballroom of the Four Seasons Biltmore. As our
annual fundraising gala, this romantic evening is a perfect way to spend your
Valentine’s Day while supporting live opera in our community.
Your night will begin with cocktails and a silent auction
followed by a candlelight dinner accompanied by operatic arias and duets
performed by tenor Alexey Sayapin and soprano Micaëla Oeste (pictured at
left.) Andrew Firestone will preside as auctioneer at an exciting live
auction before dancing to the fun and sophisticated sounds of the Society
Jazz quartet featuring vocalist Glenn Novack.
Tickets are $250 per person or a VIP Table of 8 for $3,000 and
are currently on sale by calling 805.898.3890.
Opera on the Go: The Two Figaros
Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro is
usually thought of as a non-political work. Unlike the celebrated play (Le
Mariage de Figaro) by Beaumarchais (pictured at left) upon which it
is based, Mozart’s opera has often been represented as having
little revolutionary purpose. In this talk, Simon Williams will disagree with
this judgment. In discussing the play and the opera he will show that both
were deeply subversive of the established order, but in different and
unexpected ways. Both works reflect the turbulent revolutionary times in
which they were written and both are surprisingly modern in their outlook.
Please join speaker Simon Williams for an insightful and thrilling insight
into the turmoil of a time that gave birth to a turbulent world.
The talk will be presented on Wednesday, February 8, at 5:30 pm at the
Santa Barbara Historical Museum, 136 East De La Guerra Street.
Tickets: $15 General, $12 Subscribers & Museum Members, $5 Students.
You can Become an Artist Host!
Opera Santa Barbara brings some of the finest performers and
creative teams from across the country to create the productions you see on
our stage. Our ability to bring these artists to Santa Barbara is dependent
on our Artist Hosts; it is their hospitality that enables live opera
of the highest quality to flourish in our community! For our upcoming
productions of The Marriage of Figaro and Orpheus and Eurydice,
we must secure housing for over 45 artists!
Artist Hosts provide each artist with a private bedroom, bathroom,
access to a kitchen, and an internet connection. The artists provide their
own food, entertainment and transportation. Artists are in Santa Barbara for
about 4 weeks for our mainstage productions. Artists Hosts receive
complimentary tickets to the opera production for which they are hosting, a
$100 cash stipend, as well as invitations to several VIP receptions.
If you are interested in becoming an Artist Host or
would like more information, CLICK HERE, or

How do children react and relate to the art of our time? How do we
experience contemporary art? What new awareness can we acquire from
children? Religious leaders, intellectuals, and scientists such as
Honoré de Balzac, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Albert Einstein, Aldous Huxley,
and Marcel Proust, espoused a practice of perceiving art and science
through a child's perspective-straightforward, devoid of pretense, and
unflinching in its outlook-to invigorate the imagination. Inspired by
this perspective, Flights from Wonder transforms CAF into a
series of engaging, hands-on, interactive installations that heighten
the synergy between artists and audience, and challenge people of all
ages to re-imagine their relationship to art.
Flights from
Wonder empowers audiences
to think, play, and create, and rejects the myth that contemporary art
is mystifying or elitist, demonstrating instead that art is an
enriching and stimulating part of the human experience. more

York-based artist Afruz Amighi will create an on-site sculptural
installation, which explores the often ignored and unmonumental
architecture of poverty and desperation. A growing landscape of refugee
camps, and their make shift tents, dot the borders of the Middle East.
In Amighi's work these structures manifest as large graphite drawings,
hovering in space, in a realm of permanent dislocation. Above the
drawings an installation mimicking the night sky hangs. The stars are arranged
in the Kufic Arabic script spelling out the Quranic surah for
solace.. more

Earth Day
registration opens Friday, February 3
Join us for CEC's Earth Day Festival
Registration
opens this week for CEC's annual Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival on April
21 and 22, 2012. Building on the success of last year's festival,
which attracted 38,000 people, CEC is once again partnering with Plus
One Events and LoaTree to host a two-day event with exhibits, music,
and the latest in green technology.
If you wish to
receive any further updates about exhibiting at the Santa
Barbara Earth Day Festival, you must sign up for our "Exhibitor
email list." This is your last opportunity to sign up for
this list. Join below:

On Friday,
February 3 at noon, a link to the registration form will appear
on the Earth Day website. The registration
process should take 10-15 minutes to complete. To help you prepare,
please note that you will need:
- Identification number - A 501(c)3 number
for non-profits or an EIN for businesses.
- Equipment and electricity needs - How many canopies,
umbrellas, tables, and/or chairs you need to rent, and whether
you will need electricity at your booth.
- Proof of liability insurance - You must provide a
certificate of liability insurance naming CEC as additionally
insured with a minimum of $1,000,000 comprehensive general
liability insurance. You may send this to CEC separately if
needed. Options are available for small non-profits. See details here >
- Zone placement - In order to better
organize the festival for exhibitors and attendees, we have
redesigned the event by subject area -- or zone. You will
be asked to select the zone that best matches the intent of your
exhibit. Our team will then make actual booth assignments for
all exhibitors and will release those placements on Thursday,
March 15. Review the zones >
For more on
festival highlights, our partners, and what to expect at the festival
this year, visit www.SBEarthDay.org or follow us on Facebook and Twitter. We look forward to seeing

Putting Down
Roots-Ventura County’s Early Immigrant Farmers
New Exhibit at
Agriculture Museum Opens February 11
For
more than 200 years, agriculture has been an enduring magnet attracting
newcomers. In the new exhibit Putting Down Roots: Ventura County’s Immigrant
Farmers, 1800-1910, visitors to the Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture
Museum in Santa Paula can learn about the farmers and laborers who settled here
after traveling from across the country and around the world. The exhibit opens
February 11 and runs through May 20 in the Finch Family Gallery.
Historic
photographs put faces to the laborers and farmers who came here long ago and
often stayed, as have many of their descendants. Visitors are invited to
consider what caused migrants to leave their original homes and what factors
brought them specifically to this county. The great distances and varied places
from which they traveled are illustrated on a large wall map, and replica maps
show how rancho lands were divided into small family farms. Also on display are
tools settlers used to clear land and grow crops, as well as home goods they
used to care for their families.
Because
of the wealth of material about agricultural immigration, the museum is
planning a second exhibition to explore influx through the 20th and
into the 21st centuries. Part I of Putting Down Roots is
funded in part by a grant from the Heritage Fund at the Ventura County
Community Foundation.
An
exhibition of 1930s photographs by Horace Bristol opens March 3. A free
reception for both exhibits will be held at the Agriculture Museum on Sunday,
March 4, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., and will include screenings of the 1936 Dust
Bowl documentary “The Plow That Broke the Plains.”
The
Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum is located at 926
Railroad Avenue, Santa Paula, California, in their historic downtown, near the
Depot and next to the railroad tracks. Hours are 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Wednesday through
Sunday. Admission is $4 adults, $3
seniors, $1 children 6-17, free for Museum of Ventura County members & children
ages 5 and younger. First Sundays of each month are free admission for all
ages. For more information, go to www.venturamuseum.org or call
(805) 525-3100.
Pre-Columbian
Musical Instruments & Mesoamerican Inspired Pieces On Exhibit at Museum of
Ventura County Feb 25-May 27
Opening
Reception Friday, February 24
Music
before Columbus: The Collection of Luis Perez opens at the Museum of Ventura County
on February 25, exhibiting Ventura-based musician and archaeomusicologist Luis
Perez’s collection of Pre-Columbian musical instruments and ritual objects from
Mesoamerica. A related exhibit entitled The White Instruments: Recent
Creations by Luis Perez, features modern wind and percussion instruments
sculpted in clay by Perez. He uses these Pre-Columbian inspired pieces to
compose and record contemporary music. Both exhibits run through May 27, 2012.
The opening reception for these exhibits
and for Hilos de la Vida/Threads of Life: The Weavers of Teotitlán del Valle
is Friday, February 24, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with musical entertainment
by Grupo Amor y Paz. Admission to the reception is $5 for the general
public, free for museum members. To RSVP call 805.653.0323 x7.
Music
before Columbus provides an introductory glimpse
into the pre-Columbian world of music, dance and ritual with detailed
information on selected artifacts. In a gallery video, visitors can hear the
sounds made by several of the pieces. Perez, who grew up in Mexico City, has
devoted himself to extensive research into Pre-Columbian music and mythology,
the collection of archaeological artifacts, and the study of living musical
traditions in Mexico.
On Sunday, March 11 at 2:00 p.m. Perez
will share his knowledge about music and ritual in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica
and demonstrate the unique sounds of a selection of artifacts from the exhibit.
Admission to the lecture is $5 for the general public, free for museum members.
To RSVP call 805.653.0323 x 7.
The Museum of Ventura County is located
at 100 East Main Street in downtown Ventura. Hours are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday
through Sunday. Admission to the exhibitions is $4 adults, $3 seniors, $1

Testimonials:
This shrine
making experience gave me a tangible beautiful representation of the
most vulnerable and yet resilient and powerful force that is truly
the essence of me. This experience opened up my eyes to what truly is
inside of me. It made me understand that I am a precious guardian of
heaven. That I have the power to accept this beautiful elemental
energy that is who I am and it made me feel proud, beautiful and so
utterly grateful. I can't ever repay what this course revealed to me.
It is priceless awesomeness lead by the most giving and precious soul
that is Beth Amine. R. D.
Last weekend,
I had one of the most satisfying adventures of my artistic life,
participating in one of Beth's shrine-making workshops. It was a
glorious, fun day- timeless in the sense of being totally present and
absorbed in my project, and yet the hours sped by in a flash.By the
end of the day, each of us had created a unique piece, with much laughter, deep sharing and warmth to take home along
with our masterpieces. It was, for me, the beginning of a new
adventure in making personal, beautiful art... discovering a
delightful, new creative passion. Thank you, Beth, for a most
satisfying and empowering day. Can't wait until your next
workshop! S.V.
