PCPA Theaterfest presents
Arthur Miller’s All My Sons

All My Sons is Arthur Miller’s searing drama of a family’s dark secret amid the fleeting hopes that a son missing in action will come home. It plays in the Severson Theatre March 8 - 25, 2012.

The play - which took Miller over 2 ½ years to write - weighs one man’s social responsibility with his family's security and reveals the toll it ultimately takes. It’s a moving portrait of an American family smashed apart in a collision of ethics, loyalties, and love. Director James Edmondson said, “On one hand, All My Sons is a mystery play, where we wait for great truths to be revealed; while on the other, it is an insightful study of character where everyone’s truth is essential to our understanding of humanity and human actions, and responsibilities.”

Edmondson’s past directing credits for PCPA include Man of La Mancha, The Comedy of Errors, The Crucible, The Music Man, and A Raisin in the Sun. In addition he played Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, the title role in King Lear, and George Bernard Shaw in Dear Liar. Since 1972, Mr. Edmondson has been a resident actor/director at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

The cast features PCPA resident artists Peter S. Hadres* as Joe Keller, Kitty Balay* as Kate Keller, Quinn Mattfeld* as Chris Keller, Evans Eden Jarnefeldt as George Deever and Mark Booher as Dr. Jim Bayliss. The cast also features 2nd year conservatory students Nicole Widtfeldt as Ann Deever, Cooper Karn as Frank Lubey, and Sami Carson as Lydia Lubey. Rounding out the cast, Acting Intern Anne Guynn plays Sue Bayliss and young performer Thomas Apel plays Bert.

The production team, under the direction of Edmondson, includes Scenic Designer Stephen Henson, Costume Designer Tracy M. Ward, Lighting Designer Anthony Palmer, Sound Designer Irwin Appel, Stage Manager Aleah Van Woert, and Dramaturge Patricia M. Troxel.

All My Sons won the Tony Award for Best Author and Best Direction of a Play in 1947. It also received the Drama Critics’ Circle and Donaldson Awards. He followed that success with Death of a Salesman in 1949, which won every major theatrical award in addition to the Pulitzer Prize. In 1953, Miller captured another Tony for The Crucible. He continued to write throughout his life and received the William Inge Festival Award for distinguished achievement in American Theater, and, in 1998, he was named as Distinguished Inaugural Senior Fellow of the American Academy in Berlin. He died in 2005 at the age of 89. Theatre critic Lyn Gardner observed, “He was the great conscience of the American nation - and a damn good playwright in every sense.”

HENRY VI, PART 3

In a gripping, visceral staging of Shakespeare's great historical tragedy, eight Lit Moon actors depict the blood-saturated events of the English civil war known as the Wars of the Roses. The play presents a nation ripped apart by familial and national discord, and depicts the dizzying reversals and betrayals that drive the violent action. Directed by John Blondell, the Lit Moon production anticipates Blondell's staging of the play for the Macedonian National Theatre in Bitola, participants in the Globe Theatre's Globe to Globe Festival, presented as part of the 2012 Olympic Games. In that festival, all 37 of Shakespeare's plays will be played in 37 different languages in the first festival of its kind ever produced. Come see it in Santa Barbara, in English, right here at the Center Stage!

THE JAGUAR'S NEST

A staged reading of a new play
Produced by Maria Lane Ross
Story by Maria Lane Ross
Written by Ed Giron & Maria Lane Ross
Directed by Ed Giron

The Jaguar's Nest is a fictional story of an individual's struggle against a society that neglects mental illness. Funny, irreverent, dramatic, and sometimes heartbreaking! The story reflects a woman's struggle within herself and with a failed system, where when everything looks to be stripped from you, if you still have hope, miracles happen.... Our journey progresses with situations that are comedic, some sad, some joyful, just as in life. The mix of elements of the work are thought-provoking, without being heavy-handed & light, with some hard punches of reality to show what does not work in our society. The story portrays the main character both in the present tense and younger, intertwining what was, what is, what could have been, and a mixture of reality and supposition that acknowledges whether we are diagnosed or not, we all live in a pretty surreal world! Written and directed by the esteemed Ed Giron. We anticipate and encourage a lively discussion at our Q&A sessions following each performance. These performances benefit Peoples' Self-Help Housing, with the specifically designated purpose of providing emotionally challenged, low-income residents of Santa Barbara complimentary access to the exquisite cultural events Santa Barbara has to offer!

ABOUT Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP)The Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP) works to protect, preserve, restore, reconstruct, and interpret historic sites in Santa Barbara County. Founded in 1963 by Dr. Pearl Chase and other concerned community leaders, SBTHP operates El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park—Santa Barbara’s 18th century birthplace—under a unique agreement with California State Parks and recently purchased the neighboring building that housed Jimmy’s Oriental Gardens, providing an opportunity to interpret the history of Santa Barbara’s Asian American community in the Presidio Neighborhood. SBTHP owns and operates Casa de la Guerra, the 1820s home of Presidio Comandante José de la Guerra and his family—the restored home is now a museum featuring original furnishings and rotating exhibits. Recently, SBTHP signed an agreement with State Parks to manage and develop the Santa Inés Mission Mills, located near the town of Solvang, as a future California State Park. SBTHP was awarded the 2011 Trustees’ Emeritus Award for Excellence in the Stewardship of Historic Sites by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  With the help of continuing education programs and exhibits, SBTHP strives to encourage community involvement and foster an appreciation for Santa Barbara County’s distinct history. How An Early Homestead Family Endured Against the Odds In Our Santa Monica Mountains

Free Presentation with Special Guests: March 1st at 5:30 at Museum

From Malibu to the Ventura County line, the Santa Monica Mountains bring to mind beautiful hiking trails and amazing coastal view homes. But in 1917, when homesteaders Lauretta and John Spurgeon Houston arrived in what is still a remote corner of Ventura County, life was much tougher. Rediscover their story on Thursday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m., when the Museum of Ventura County presents the free lecture The Story Within The Story: Behind the Scenes of the Journal of Ventura County History.

The museum’s Research Librarian Charles Johnson takes the audience behind the scenes of the newest publication of the “Journal of Ventura County History,” which focuses on the struggles of the Houston family. Johnson describes the rediscovery of “The Big Ranch Fight” an article about the homesteaders published 57 years ago, and introduces the “village” of people who helped him bring their story to a new generation of readers. He is joined by Linda Valois, National Park Service, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, who has lived and worked in the area for over a decade and who describes current efforts by the National Park Service to preserve the area’s history through research and oral interviews.

Museum of Ventura County members are automatically members of the Ventura County Historical Society, so they are encouraged to not only come for the presentation, but to vote on updates proposed for the Society’s Articles of Incorporation.

“The Journal of Ventura County History” is published twice yearly, and is one of the benefits of museum membership. Copies of the new issue may be purchased at the March 1 event or reserved through the museum store by calling (805) 653-0323 ext 316. Since 2008 “The Journal of Ventura County History” has been a joint venture of the Museum of Ventura County and Moorpark College. Prior to that, the museum’s Historical Society published it for 53 years as “The Quarterly.”

The Museum of Ventura County is located at 100 East Main Street in downtown Ventura. Hours are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Admission to the exhibitions is $4 adults, $3 seniors, $1 children 6-17, members and children under 6 are free. For more museum information go to www.venturamuseum.org or call 805-653-0323.

When: Thursday, February 16, 2012; 7-9 pm

Sailing adventures, sea mishaps and life as the commander of the USS Constitution are just some of the topics that will be discussed during Michael Beck’s talk titled “Sailing the USS Constitution.” Michael Beck is the current headmaster of Dunn School in Los Olivos’s and is one of those people who says yes to life. He was asked by an Admiral, “If you could, would you sail the USS Constitution?” His answer was yes.  And so the adventure began. Michael Beck learned later that he was the only person who answered yes to that question.  Perhaps the others interviewed thought it was a trick question since USS Constitution had not sailed under its own power since 1881.  The USS Constitution is a wooden hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy. Named by President George Washington after the United States Constitution, she is the world’s oldest commissioned naval vessel afloat. The United States Navy League honored Beck’s work in USS Constitution by making him the youngest recipient of the Arliegh Burke Leadership Award. Beck will speak about his experiences sailing the USS Constitution on Thursday, February 16th from 7-9 pm in the Munger Theatre at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.

Eugène Delacroix, Liberty Leading the People, 1830, oil on canvas. Musée du Louvre, Paris

On Delacroix's Liberty On the Barricades
Guest lecture by Ralph Ubl

Thursday, February 16, 5:30 – 6:30pm

Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863) welcomed the July Revolution of 1830, but was very happy that with the accession to the throne of Louis Philippe d'Orleans the political situation was stabilized again. He showed no political sympathy for the advocates of a republic, who wanted to continue the revolution, or for the craftsmen and laborers who had surely hoped for more to come out of their victorious struggle in the streets of Paris than a new dynasty. With his monumental Liberty Leading the People (or Liberty on the Barricades) Delacroix created a painting that should become the image of revolution par excellence. What we are dealing with here is a surprising situation: the citizen feared revolution while the artist celebrated its sublime beauty.

In his lecture, Ralph Ubl will argue that Liberty Leading the People offers a Romantic interpretation of political conflict. Delacroix understood the revolutionary barricade as a site where social reality is transformed by virtue of the power of images.

“The partnership between CAF and the Hotel Indigo helps us bring our vibrant Santa Barbara Arts community to a whole new group of people. The changing shows will allow CAF to showcase local and international artists to people visiting Santa Barbara and show them what an interesting arts community we have," says Carolyn Glasoe, President of the Board of Trustees of the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum.  " At the same time, this satellite location brings even more opportunity to showcase art, educate and provide even more opportunities to artists in our community."

Attendees may leave a business card to enter a raffle for a chance to win a free hotel stay, CAF membership, and Kunin Wines tasting.  After the festivities, visitors will continue onto CAF’s main location in the Paseo Nuevo mall to see Sarah Paul Ocampo’s Forum Lounge performance of Happy Foot, Sad Foot.

The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder. -Albert Einstein

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives. -Albert Einstein

Religious leaders, intellectuals, and scientists such as Honoré de Balzac, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Albert Einstein, Aldous Huxley, and Marcel Proust, espoused a practice of perceiving art and science through a child’s perspective—straightforward, devoid of pretense, and unflinching in its outlook—to invigorate the imagination. Their philosophy encourages us as adults to cast aside preconceived notions and approach the world from this unfettered child’s point of view, so that we may broaden our world view, and stimulate our minds, allowing for greater degrees of discovery, curiosity, compassion, and wonder.

Inspired by this perspective, Flights from Wonder transforms CAF into a series of engaging, hands-on, interactive installations that heighten the synergy between artists and audience, and challenge all ages to re-imagine their relationship to art. The exhibition explores alternate ways to experience art by posing questions such as: How do children react and relate to the art of our time? How do we experience contemporary art? What new awareness can we acquire from children?  Featuring an internationally recognized group of artists including Christopher Chiappa, Liz Craft, Martha Friedman, FriendsWithYou, Jon Pylypchuk, Carolyn Salas, Mindy Shapero, Shinique Smith, and Phoebe Washburn, Flights from Wonder empowers audiences to think, play, and create, and rejects the myth that contemporary art is mystifying or elitist, demonstrating instead that art is an enriching and stimulating part of the human experience.

Bloom Projects:  Afruz Amighi, Suspended City

Afruz Amighi will create an on-site sculptural installation, which highlights the often ignored and unmonumental architecture of poverty and desperation. Drawing inspiration from the ever-expanding landscape of refugee camps that dot Middle East borders with make-shift tents, Amighi represents these  structures as large graphite drawings.  Hovering in space, in a realm of permanent dislocation, these drawings are suspended beneath a night sky with stars arranged in the Kufic Arabic script to spell out surah, the Quranic word for solace.

Born in Tehran, Iran, Afruz Amighi received a B.A. in Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University, New York, NY, and an M.F.A. from New York University, New York, NY.  A New York resident, she has completed a residency program at the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY, and was selected for the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art Emerge Program in collaboration with Creative Capital. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York, NY.

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents the National Theatre Live broadcast of Travelling Light in high-def at the Lobero Theatre – a funny and fascinating tribute to the early days of cinema

End Date:                  Wednesday, March 7

UCSB Arts & Lectures presents a National Theatre Live high-definition broadcast of Travelling Light, an enchanting new play that pays homage to the early days of cinema, on Wednesday, March 7 at 7:30 PM at the Lobero Theatre.

In a remote village in Eastern Europe circa 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of storytelling.

Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play, directed by the always brilliant Nicholas Hytner and featuring award-winning actor Antony Sher, is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s Golden Age.

“As The Artist threatens to win the first silent Best Picture Oscar since 1927, Nicholas Wright’s play offers a fairytale imagining of how it all began,” writes The Times of London in a four-star review. The Guardian (U.K.) calls it “a love letter to the movies and an appealingly intelligent evocation of the Jewish folk culture that formed the basis of American cinema.”

National Theatre Live screenings presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures at the Lobero Theatre are broadcasts of live theater performances filmed previously at the London playhouse.

Admission to Travelling Light is $18 for the general public and $10 for all students with a current student ID. For tickets or more information, call 805-893-3535 or purchase online at www.ArtsAndLectures.UCSB.edu.

Bay Hallowell “Chakra Chimes: Recent Monoprints” March 2 to April 13, 2012

Opening Reception Friday, March 2, 5-7 pm

1st Thursday Reception, April 5, 5-8 pm

The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara is pleased to announce a new exhibition by Bay Hallowell, entitled “Chakra Chimes.”   The public is invited to attend a festive opening reception with the artist on Friday, March 2nd from 5-7 pm.  A 1st Thursday reception will be held on April 5th from 5-8 pm, in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization.

Bay Hallowell will present a series of twenty colorful monoprints inspired by the chakras.  Each monoprint is a unique, layered composition of vibrant colors and shapes.  According to medieval texts from India, the chakras are seven energy centers located at various points on the spine, each associated with a particular color and sound.  As visual equivalents of their invisible, shifting energies, some monoprints focus on one or two chakras, while others combine as many as six or seven.  As a longtime student of yoga, meditating and musing on the chakras was a starting point for Hallowell’s explorations of shape, color, symmetry and asymmetry.  These beautiful monoprints are built up over time, using oil-based inks and hand-cut plastic shapes on Plexiglas plates, and are printed on fine paper.

For thirty-two years, Hallowell created, taught, and supervised gallery, studio, and outreach programs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA.  She has also taught in colleges and universities, written publications for museums and schools, and worked as an art museum consultant.   As a student of painting and art criticism at Bennington College in Vermont, Hallowell studied with Jules Olitski, Lawrence Alloway, and Clement Greenberg.  More recently, Siu Zimmerman introduced the artist to monoprint techniques at Santa Barbara City College’s Adult Education Program.

The Architectural Foundation is located in the historic Acheson House at the corner of Garden and East Victoria Streets, with the gallery entrance on Garden Street.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, and by appointment.  The Garden Street entrance is accessible by ramp.

The paintings in Don Ed Hardy's upcoming show at Sylvia White Gallery evolved from the monumental 4 x 500 foot work 2000 Dragons, executed in the millennial year (a Dragon Year in the Asian zodiac). This was a decisive turning point for the artist in its scale and expansive gesture, as he had spent the previous four decades in near-daily practice with the obsessive precision of intaglio printmaking, lithography, tattooing, and careful watercolors. The mission goal of making two thousand dragons with no preplanned composition freed Hardy up to explore pure abstract elements along with recognizable forms. The spontaneous works since then continue to develop intuitively at the moment of painting.

The big scroll was executed with acrylic on archival synthetic paper, which was available in huge rolls. Featherweight and durable, it was the most practical solution for a work of immense scale. The saturation of pigment into paper as an instantaneous indelible record-with little or no over painting-continues and amplifies Hardy's works with metal plates, sumi ink, and skin. The current works further explore pure autographic expressive gesture.

Immersed in Western as well as Asian art history, aesthetics, and theories of brushwork, Hardy has a long relationship with living and working in Japan. Along with the paintings are a new series of small porcelain sculptures. Made in collaboration with ceramist Trevor Ewald, these extend Hardy's work done during several visits to Arita, Japan. There, at the invitation of a traditional kiln, he glazed production wares with unexpected themes, extending and subverting venerable tradition. The new ceramics are inspired by a series of his late '90s paintings featuring garment forms from 15th and 16th century Northern European engravings (first studied in his undergraduate days at the San Francisco Art Institute) to which he added components of tattoo and pop themes.

Mr. Hardy graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967 with a BFA in printmaking.  He retired from tattooing in 2006 and now divides his time between San Francisco and Honolulu with frequent trips to Japan to work in porcelain and study its visual culture.

The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception, Saturday, February 25. The Sylvia White Gallery is located at 1783 E Main St in Ventura and open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 11am to 5pm.  For more information, please call 805-643-8300.

Chris Eckert

Auto Ink

2010

Polychromated metal, microelectronics

54" x 22" x 20"

Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, Chris Eckert's works of art reflect the mechanical world he used to inhabit. His newest sculptural pieces explore the artistic potential of factory automation itself, from automatic religion assignment in Auto Ink to a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a knife-wielding machine in Auto Masochist. Eckert dances a fine and unnerving line with Gimme, an automated eyeball that watches your every move as it begs for loose change. As visions of Wall-E and the Matrix appear, we have to wonder how close the machines are to not needing the genius of someone like Eckert to bring them to life. Perhaps the essential component to the pieces that undermines their intimidation factor and makes them playful is audience interaction. Like a futurist carnival for grown-ups, Eckert's interactive pieces bring a smile to even the most robotic faces.

Join the Million Plates Campaign for the Arts:

Support California Arts By Buying An Arts License Plate at Artsplate.org

The Million Plates Campaign for the Arts is working to raise $40 million in new funding for over 300 arts programs in California schools and communities through the sale of the California Arts License Plate.   The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission has joined the California Arts Council (CAC), regional arts councils, local organizers, and campaign partners in this crucial campaign to persuade one million California drivers to purchase an Arts License Plate.

The state of California currently ranks dead last in per capita arts funding, spending a mere 22 cents per person on arts education.  A re-commitment to the arts through the sale of one million Arts Plates would take the Golden State from last to near the top.

The arts are essential to our state, especially in these difficult economic times.  California’s economy relies on creative minds, artistic organizations and innovative workers.  The Million Plates Campaign for the Arts empowers every Californian to fund the arts in their schools and communities and ensure that crucial programs receive the steady support they deserve.

The plate’s image titled “Coastline” was created in 1993 by legendary California artist Wayne Thiebaud.  The plate has raised over $20 million for California arts since its debut in 1994.

If you do not have an Arts Plate, you can easily purchase standard plates online through the DMV for $50.  Personalized plates cost $98.

If you have one already, tell your friends, neighbors, and local businesses with fleets of vehicles (they’re tax deductible!).

Report back to us if you convince any businesses to come on board so we can make sure the campaign provides them with some free advertising!

To find out more about the Million Plates Campaign and to purchase your Arts Plate, please visit artsplate.org, and don’t forget to “like” us on Facebook at facebook.com/millionplates.
