The Magical
Seaweed Play
Explores Sustainable Solutions
SANTA BARBARA: The
Magical Seaweed: Mica’s Adventure in the Sea of Plastic, a play by Isaac Hernandez and
performed by students from Open Alternative School (OAS), opens at La Cumbre
Junior High Theatre on March 16 and 17, at 6:00 pm. The play, inspired in part by a field trip
taught by Art From Scrap Green Schools environmental educators, focuses greatly
on the negative impacts that plastic litter is having upon the world’s oceans,
and adds large doses of humor to this serious topic.
Hernandez,
a parent at OAS, as well as a photographer, writer, and painter says that The Magical Seaweed is a play for adults
and children alike. “The kids add a
great dose of humor to a very serious issue. In the play, we try to laugh at
the problems while providing sustainability solutions.” Students at OAS worked
with Hernandez to invent their characters and to create a relevant story. The students designed and built their
costumes and sets using plastic litter and trash they collected from their
homes. Other materials were donated by
Art From Scrap, environmental partner for this production.
“I was
inspired to write a play about the negative impacts that plastic has on the
ocean after going on the Watershed Resource Center field trip. I saw that many of the kids didn’t know about
plastic in the ocean and that they seemed really interested in learning more.
This motivated me to write the play.” Hernandez shares. “The Magical
Seaweed takes the mission of Art From Scrap, which is educating about the
environment and arts, and makes people think about how their actions affect
ocean health.”
Hernández was also inspired by many of the
environmental leaders he has photographed and interviewed for the EcoHeroes
Project, including oceanographer Sylvia Earle, Andy
Lipkis from TreePeople, Paul Stamets of Fungi
Perfecti, and William McDonough, co-author of Cradle to Cradle.
“Many people have worked to make The
Magical Seaweed,” says Hernandez. “It wouldn’t be possible without the
students and their Open Alternative Middle School teacher, David Archer; plus
the many parents, grandparents, students, and volunteers.”
The evening includes a bake sale
and raffle benefiting Art from Scrap
and OAS, as well as a “Trash Art”
gallery show of works created by the students.
Hernández promises that “The Magical Seaweed will make you
laugh and move you. The power of theater has always been to communicate current
events. We all learned a lot in the process, like the fact that 70% of the
Earth's oxygen is generated by the oceans.”
The Magical Seaweed is dedicated to two beloved members of the Santa
Barbara community recently lost: OAS teacher and parent Carmen Alexander and
filmmaker Mike deGruy. They both embodied a love for the outdoors, the
environment, the arts, and positive education. Carmen was a teacher in the
class and contributed to the creation of The Magical Seaweed. Her son,
Sasha, is a member of the cast.

On This Earth, with Nick Brandt: March
17, 2012 from 6-8 PM Santa Barbara Museum of Art Lecture: March 18,2012 at 2:30
PM
Exhibition: March 1 through April 27,
2012
Gallery 27 presents 'On This Earth, A
Shadow Falls' photographs by Nick Brandt. In 2001, Nick Brandt embarked on an
ambitious photographic project, a trilogy of books to memorialize the vanishing
grandeur of the natural world of East Africa. The 21 large-scale photographs in
the exhibition are taken from this photographic project. This exhibition will
tie in with a Fundraiser for Big Life Foundation. Founded in September 2010 by
photographer Nick Brandt in urgent response to the recent dramatic escalation
in poaching across much of Africa, Big Life Foundation is a non-profit
organization dedicated to the conservation of East Africa’s wildlife and
ecosystems. This foundation in its short duration is already garnering a
dramatic reduction in poaching, however, the killing continues unabated in the
areas where Big Life still has no presence. Brandt’s goal with this fundraiser
is to raise additional funds to save these irreplaceable creatures.

Architectural
Foundation of Santa
Barbara
Bay Hallowell
“Chakra Chimes: Recent Monoprints”
Opening Reception
Friday, March 2, 5-7 pm
The Architectural
Foundation of Santa Barbara invites you to attend a festive opening reception
for “Chakra Chimes: Recent Monotypes” with artist Bay Hallowell on Friday,
March 2nd from 5-7 pm. A 1st Thursday reception
will take place on April 5th in collaboration with the Santa Barbara
Downtown Organization. The exhibition continues through April 13, 2012.
Bay Hallowell
presents a series of twenty colorful monoprints inspired by the chakras.
Each monoprint is a unique, layered composition of vibrant colors and
shapes. As a longtime student of yoga, meditating and musing on the
chakras was a starting point for Hallowell’s explorations of shape, color,
symmetry and asymmetry. These beautiful monoprints are built up over
time, using oil-based inks and hand-cut plastic shapes on Plexiglas plates, and
are printed on Rives BFK paper. For thirty-two years, Hallowell created,
taught, and supervised gallery, studio, and outreach programs at the
Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh,
PA. As a student of painting and art criticism at Bennington College in
Vermont, Hallowell studied with Jules Olitski, Lawrence Alloway, and Clement
Greenberg. More recently, Siu Zimmerman introduced the artist to
monoprint techniques at Santa Barbara City College’s Adult Education
Program.
The Architectural
Foundation is located in the historic Acheson House at the corner of Garden and
East Victoria Streets. The gallery entrance on Garden Street is
accessible by ramp. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to
2 pm, and by appointment. We look forward to seeing you!
