The Magical Seaweed Play
Explores Sustainable Solutions

SANTA BARBARA:  The Magical Seaweed: Mica’s Adventure in the Sea of Plastic, a play by Isaac Hernandez and performed by students from Open Alternative School (OAS), opens at La Cumbre Junior High Theatre on March 16 and 17, at 6:00 pm.  The play, inspired in part by a field trip taught by Art From Scrap Green Schools environmental educators, focuses greatly on the negative impacts that plastic litter is having upon the world’s oceans, and adds large doses of humor to this serious topic.

Hernandez, a parent at OAS, as well as a photographer, writer, and painter says that The Magical Seaweed is a play for adults and children alike.  “The kids add a great dose of humor to a very serious issue. In the play, we try to laugh at the problems while providing sustainability solutions.” Students at OAS worked with Hernandez to invent their characters and to create a relevant story.  The students designed and built their costumes and sets using plastic litter and trash they collected from their homes.  Other materials were donated by Art From Scrap, environmental partner for this production.

“I was inspired to write a play about the negative impacts that plastic has on the ocean after going on the Watershed Resource Center field trip.  I saw that many of the kids didn’t know about plastic in the ocean and that they seemed really interested in learning more. This motivated me to write the play.” Hernandez shares.  “The Magical Seaweed takes the mission of Art From Scrap, which is educating about the environment and arts, and makes people think about how their actions affect ocean health.”

Hernández was also inspired by many of the environmental leaders he has photographed and interviewed for the EcoHeroes Project, including oceanographer Sylvia Earle, Andy Lipkis from TreePeople, Paul Stamets of Fungi Perfecti, and William McDonough, co-author of Cradle to Cradle.

“Many people have worked to make The Magical Seaweed,” says Hernandez. “It wouldn’t be possible without the students and their Open Alternative Middle School teacher, David Archer; plus the many parents, grandparents, students, and volunteers.”

The evening includes a bake sale and raffle benefiting Art from Scrap and OAS, as well as a “Trash Art” gallery show of works created by the students.  Hernández promises that “The Magical Seaweed will make you laugh and move you. The power of theater has always been to communicate current events. We all learned a lot in the process, like the fact that 70% of the Earth's oxygen is generated by the oceans.”

The Magical Seaweed is dedicated to two beloved members of the Santa Barbara community recently lost: OAS teacher and parent Carmen Alexander and filmmaker Mike deGruy. They both embodied a love for the outdoors, the environment, the arts, and positive education. Carmen was a teacher in the class and contributed to the creation of The Magical Seaweed. Her son, Sasha, is a member of the cast.

On This Earth, with Nick Brandt: March 17, 2012 from 6-8 PM Santa Barbara Museum of Art Lecture: March 18,2012 at 2:30 PM

Exhibition: March 1 through April 27, 2012

Gallery 27 presents 'On This Earth, A Shadow Falls' photographs by Nick Brandt. In 2001, Nick Brandt embarked on an ambitious photographic project, a trilogy of books to memorialize the vanishing grandeur of the natural world of East Africa. The 21 large-scale photographs in the exhibition are taken from this photographic project. This exhibition will tie in with a Fundraiser for Big Life Foundation. Founded in September 2010 by photographer Nick Brandt in urgent response to the recent dramatic escalation in poaching across much of Africa, Big Life Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of East Africa’s wildlife and ecosystems. This foundation in its short duration is already garnering a dramatic reduction in poaching, however, the killing continues unabated in the areas where Big Life still has no presence. Brandt’s goal with this fundraiser is to raise additional funds to save these irreplaceable creatures.

As The Artist threatens to win the first silent Best Picture Oscar since 1927, Nicholas Wright’s play offers a fairytale imagining of how it all began.”

The Times, London

Directed by Nicholas Hytner
In a remote village in Eastern Europe circa 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of storytelling. Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern
European Jewish immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s Golden Age. (170 min./one intermission)

As the offbeat and grippingly watchable star of films from Say Anything and High Fidelity to Being John Malkovich, The Grifters and Con Air, he is one of the most respected and versatile Hollywood actors of his generation, garnering critical acclaim for dramatic and comedic roles alike. For his latest role in The Raven, a gothic thriller (due out April 2012), he brings to life Edgar Allan Poe, the legendary American author of the macabre. The Chicago-born actor, screenwriter and producer will share stories from behind the scenes of his high-profile career.

ART | ARCHITECTURE ON FILM

Sun, Mar 11 / 1 & 3 PM / Pollock Theater

1 PM - In a Dream
In a vibrant, bohemian neighborhood of South Philadelphia, 50,000 square feet of concrete are covered with mirrors and tile –  mosaics created by Isaiah Zagar, an eccentric, tormented artist. They chronicle his love for his wife and subtly hint at the darker corners of his extraordinary imagination.
(Jeremiah Zagar, 2008, 80 min.)

3 PM - Fold Crumple Crush: The Art of El Anatsui
and The Future of Mud: A Tale of Houses and Lives in Djenne

A pairing of films by art historian and anthropologist Susan Vogel: The first tells the powerful, remarkably personal story of acclaimed African artist El Anatsui, who converts used bottle tops into huge, opulent wall hangings. (2010, 53 min.) The second examines an African tradition of mud architecture in Mali through the story of a mason and the secret knowledge he inherited from his family of masons. (2007, 58 min.)

Filmmaker Susan Vogel will be in attendance.
Additional support provided by the Friends of Africa

David Wilcox

Description: Description: http://images.patronmail.com/pmailemailimages/2038/385254/articles_10.jpg

David Wilcox has been touching the hearts of American audiences for more than 20 years with his wise and healing song writing, skillful guitar playing, and inspired improvisational performance style. His music bravely navigates a path through the emotional static of modern life towards the deep, mystical terrain of the heart. He writes songs that are wake up calls to the heart and a balm for the soul.

For David Wilcox, music is a personal compass for finding his way home. Lining it up with something deep inside, his words become image-filled poetry that dance to an internal rhythm. Challenging situations, elusive ideas, and long-suppressed feelings are directed into inspiring metaphors of hope. Coupled with a seamless melody, it is all delivered in the language of his heart.

Description: Description: Kapilow 1For almost 20 years,  Rob Kapilow has brought the joy and wonder of classical music—and unraveled some of its mysteries—to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Characterized by his unique ability to create an “aha” moment for his audiences and collaborators, whatever their level of musical sophistication or naiveté, Kapilow’s work brings music into people’s lives: opening new ears to musical experiences and helping people to listen actively rather than just hear.

 http://www.robkapilow.com/biography.shtml

“An educator, motivational speaker, and game show host, all rolled up in one...Rob Kapilow's insightful and entertaining programs...often bring moments of revelation to even the most seasoned aficionados.”
  –The Boston Globe

“A wonderful guy who brings music alive!”
   – Katie Couric,
     NBC’s Today Show

“Not since the late Leonard Bernstein has classical music had a combination salesman-teacher as irresistible as Kapilow. ... He’s as lively as a top-flight sports announcer and as entertaining as a stand-up comedian. But he’s also got substance in spades.”
    — Kansas City Star

Rob Kapilow’s engaging commentaries are “a knockout combination of entertainment and education.” Theatermania.com

“Not many people write good music for children, but Rob Kapilow appears to be an exception. ...Written in an engagingly sophisticate, quasi- stravinskian musical idiom with no hint of pandering.” - Heidi Waleson, Billboard

“In my 20 years in this business I have never seen a more innovative musical program help to open minds and change attitudes and perceptions about classical music.”
  – Martha H. Jones, President of the Celebrity Series of Boston

Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara

Bay Hallowell “Chakra Chimes: Recent Monoprints”

Opening Reception Friday, March 2, 5-7 pm

The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara invites you to attend a festive opening reception for “Chakra Chimes: Recent Monotypes” with artist Bay Hallowell on Friday, March 2nd from 5-7 pm.  A 1st Thursday reception will take place on April 5th in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization.  The exhibition continues through April 13, 2012.

Bay Hallowell presents a series of twenty colorful monoprints inspired by the chakras.  Each monoprint is a unique, layered composition of vibrant colors and shapes.  As a longtime student of yoga, meditating and musing on the chakras was a starting point for Hallowell’s explorations of shape, color, symmetry and asymmetry.  These beautiful monoprints are built up over time, using oil-based inks and hand-cut plastic shapes on Plexiglas plates, and are printed on Rives BFK paper.  For thirty-two years, Hallowell created, taught, and supervised gallery, studio, and outreach programs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA.  As a student of painting and art criticism at Bennington College in Vermont, Hallowell studied with Jules Olitski, Lawrence Alloway, and Clement Greenberg.  More recently, Siu Zimmerman introduced the artist to monoprint techniques at Santa Barbara City College’s Adult Education Program.

The Architectural Foundation is located in the historic Acheson House at the corner of Garden and East Victoria Streets.  The gallery entrance on Garden Street is accessible by ramp.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, and by appointment.  We look forward to seeing you!

“A DIGITAL AND FILM LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP” – MASTERS PROGRAM - OFFERED AT THE WILDLING ART MUSEUM

Los Olivos, CA ~ The Wildling Art Museum is pleased to announce the dates for the 2012 edition of the popular and long running “Masters Program“ landscape photography workshop, now in its eighth year. The weekend of March 30 through April 1 has been selected as the perfect time during the 2012 season to be in the Santa Ynez Valley to learn the “Language of Landscape Art”.

The three day workshop incorporates a detailed look, through examples and in-the-field practice, at the principles, effects and devices that history’s greatest landscape painters and photographers created and used in making their world class art. The classroom work is followed by guided field assignments and constructive reviews. Taught by well known and highly experienced professional landscape photographers -Tom Gamache of “Wandering Around Outdoors” and Van Webster of “Webster Communications” - students are assured a challenging intellectual and technical experience that will affect their work for a lifetime. With a varied and annually updated syllabus, the relaxed professional atmosphere of the program has attracted many different types of photographers including numerous multi-year attendees.

Because it is the artist, not the camera, that makes the picture, all types of cameras are welcome - digital and film, as well as small to large format. The course includes: advanced visualization theory (seeing without the camera), 3D to 2D (converting reality to pictures), black and white, filters, hyperfocal focusing, chiaroscuro, color, composition, centrality, light metering, atmosphere, exposure, f-stops, shutter speeds, and much more.  Elementary Photoshop techniques, HDR photography,  panoramas - their history and creation, digital fine art ink jet printing, along with hundreds of technical tips and pro-secrets will be discussed in depth. Included are continental style breakfasts and lunch on Saturday.  Group dinners are encouraged.
