Sensational One Night Stand Art Event Returns for Second Year
Santa Barbara art lovers to choose from the works of
200-plus professional artists
to benefit Art from Scrap, a program of Explore Ecology
SANTA BARBARA, CA – For the second year in a
row, on
the evening of August 11, 2012, Santa Barbara’s Art
from Scrap offers art
lovers, collectors, and artists an exciting opportunity to participate in a One Night Stand at Brooks Institute of
Photography’s Gallery 27 in downtown Santa Barbara. One Night Stand (ONS) is an
art lover’s dream and an annual fundraiser for Art from Scrap at which, for one night only, more than 200 nine-by-nine-inch
works of art will be exhibited for purchase. Last year’s sold-out event
attracted in excess of 400 patrons and artists, many of whom purchased original
artwork, raising $40,000 to support Art from Scrap’s mission of environmental
education and creative art programming. This year’s incarnation of the ONS
benefit is also in support of Art from Scrap, which is a program of Explore
Ecology, a leading environmental education and art organization,
now in its 21st year of encouraging creative expression in the arts and
promoting a greater understanding of environmental issues.
Contemporary
artists from around the country have been personally invited to contribute
artwork in all mediums. The list of artists who have accepted
the ONS challenge grows daily. Architect Barry Berkus; actor/musician
Jeff Bridges; singer/songwriter Jack Johnson; local art legends Joe Shea, Brad
Nack, and John Iwerks; environmental artist Laura Lynch; painter John Nava; and
many more have already contributed their work for what promises to be the
art event of the year. To that end, ONS 2012 will be held in an expanded
area of Gallery 27 at Brooks Institute at 27 East Cota Street.
“Last
year’s event was amazing, with so much great art and positive energy, and this
year’s One Night Stand is shaping up
to be even better,” said Executive Director Cay Sanchez. “We have a larger
space to accommodate more art, more guests, and more excitement! This is just a
fantastic way to raise awareness for the environment and creativity, and to
keep our programs funded to spread the message even further.”
Aside from the fact that it’s a one-night-only
event, One Night Stand has an additional enticing element of surprise: each
and every work of art will be unidentified. Artists’ names will be revealed
only after their artwork is purchased. Each work of art will be sold on a
first-come, first-serve basis for a pre-set rate of $200. The evening also
includes a Silent Auction, festivities, food, a Patron bar, and music.
Tickets
are available online, onsite at Art
from Scrap (302 East Cota Street), or by calling (805) 884-0459 x17. General
Entry (7 p.m.) is $25 advanced purchase or $30 at the door. Early Entry (6:30
p.m.) tickets are $100 advanced purchase and $125 at the door. Special group
ticket packages and sponsorship opportunities are also available online. Visit www.OneNightStandAFS.com for more
information.
About Art from Scrap: Art from Scrap (AFS) is Santa
Barbara’s Environmental Education and Art Center. Starting out in 1990 as a
ReUse retail store, an Arts Center, and an environmental education program, AFS
has expanded to help tens of thousands of students throughout Santa Barbara
County to understand the importance of conserving their environment through
reducing waste, improving water quality, and gardening. As its programs have
expanded over the past two decades, AFS outgrew its name, and has since evolved
into Explore Ecology, an environmental
education and art discovery program that brings the ReUse retail store, art
workshops, and environmental outreach programs under one umbrella.
About
Explore Ecology: Explore Ecology is an
environmental education and creative art discovery organization that evolved
out of Art from Scrap, which brings an array of programs
to the community in an effort to encourage people to think creatively through
hands-on science exploration and art discovery. The programs bring together
environmental awareness and artistic creativity to create a connection between
people and their environment, and encourage individuals to pro-actively effect
positive environmental change through individual actions and community
projects, with a focus on teaching about the interconnectedness of
environmental issues.

26th Annual Los Olivos Quick Draw and Art Auction
Located in
the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, the charming town of Los Olivos will host the
26th Annual Los Olivos Quick Draw and Art Auction. The day will
feature an artwork competition, silent and live auctions, food and
entertainment. This event will be held Saturday, August 18, from 9am to 5pm,
featuring artwork by 25 nationally
recognized artists.
The public is invited to join us in welcoming these fine artists at a preview
wine and dessert reception to be held on Friday, August 17, 7:00-8:30 pm at St.
Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church; music provided by Jerry Coelho.
Los Olivos has long been known for
its art galleries. Established in 1986, the Los Olivos Quick Draw has continued
for many years, even since the early days of Mattei’s Tavern. Under the bright
August sunshine the artists and crowd will gather in the Lavinia Campbell Park
at 10:00 am, corner of Grand and Alamo Pintado Avenues at the flag pole, to
enjoy the introduction of the artists by our noted emcee Jim Farnum. His unique
humor will keep you smiling.
An impressive list of artists will be
participating in the Quick Draw, including Vicki Andersen, Betty Carr, Howard
Carr, Ken Christensen, Camille Dellar, Lorna Dillon, Kelly Donovan, Jim Farnum,
Mark Greenaway, Ron Guthrie, Suzan
Hamilton-Todd, Gary Johnson, Sheryl Knight, Lee Kromschroeder, George Lockwood,
Joe Mancuso, Joe Milazzo, Vel Miller,
John Modesitt, Linda Mutti, Richard Myer, Richard Rice, Ray Sevilla, Marilyn
Simandle, and BJ Stapen.
The Quick Draw competition will begin
at 11:00 am. Each artist will work in their respective medium, developing their
art from a live model, photo or other images, or just from their imagination.
They are given 60 minutes to complete their project and submit their finished
piece to the auction arena in the park. Watch your favorite artist, or check
out other artists as they produce their beautiful artwork. It is such a treat
to see what they can accomplish in this limited time frame.
The Live Auction, led by Jim Glines,
will begin at 12:15 pm. Be sure to participate in the bidding action – it is a
fun experience and a great opportunity to take home a wonderful painting. It
will be a day to remember. The artists will be available to speak to anyone
interested in meeting them.
A Silent Auction will be held at the
Grange Hall featuring a wonderful selection of items from 9:00 am-2:30 pm.
Don’t miss this opportunity to purchase a unique item for a great value. Other
works by the artists will be on display and available for sale at St.
Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church parish hall from 1:00-5:00 pm, with a
reception for the artists from 2:00-4:00 pm.
While enjoying all of the art venues,
be sure to stop by the Rotary food booth and purchase a tasty lunch item from
their barbecue selection.
Artist coordinator, Judith Hale, has
enjoyed gathering this wonderful group of artists to participate this year, and
hopes you will join them to celebrate this beautiful event. It is a local
favorite, and this year will be no exception!
The
town of Los Olivos is located just off Highway 154 at Grand Avenue. For additional

Flores works in ceramics, glass, and
sculpture, and divides his time between Ojai and the College of the Sequoias in
Visalia, where he is the three-dimensional studio arts professor. He has
exhibited nationally in ceramics, sculpture and glass, and his pieces are in
numerous collections, including that of the Forrest L. Merril and Kamm
Foundation. Flores also worked with the late Beatrice Wood, is a juried member
of Ojai Studio Artists, and is involved in the education and development of
earth art and ceramic architecture at Cal Earth Institute in Hesperia. He
earned his master’s degree from California State University, Northridge.

Michael Cullen Todd’s biography abounds with accolades:
Woodrow Wilson and Fulbright Fellowships. Exhibits in major galleries
throughout the US. His work is found in prestigious museums such as the
Whitney, Metropolitan, Hirshhorn, Storm King Art Center, Norton Simon
Museum and LACMA. He has taught at Bennington, UC San Diego, UC Irvine,
CalArts and Otis. Although his Master’s Degree earned at UCLA focused on
printmaking, the greater portion of his artistic career has been
sculpture created in wood and steel. Todd lived and worked in Paris and
New York before moving to California. His work is inspired by and
reflects Zen teachings and the freedom of expression in California of the
late 60s, with the enso, a Zen circle motif, figuring prominently. The
90s found Todd immersed in drawing and painting. In 2003, his interest
has shifted to clay. “I find the pliability of clay very sensual. I have
traded the circle for the cylinder, the vessel.” Reserve your seat today
for Donna Granata’s interview with Michael Culled Todd, an artist whose
career has involved different media but always the constant investigation
of the circle, gravity and space.
Admission is free for FOTM

Folkways recording to be released in the fall, these seven jaraneras from Mexico, the U.S.
and Canada
create an international dialogue of song.
Led by Martha Gonzalez of Quetzal and Laura Rebolloso, a founding member
of Son de Madera, Entre Mujeres is an extension of an informal network –
Fandango sin Fronteras – which

from Los Angeles has performed on tour
throughout the Americas in Auditorio
Nacional, Mexico City, the Hollywood Bowl, among others,
backing celebrated singers from Jenny Rivera to Lady Gaga. They have
contributed to film soundtracks including Seabiscuit, Disney’s The Wonderful
Ice Cream Suit. A new album recorded
with La Sinfonica Nacional de las Americas realizes Hernandez

Luke Theatre.
Combine a
hefty helping of Tex Mex conjunto, simmer with several parts Texas rock, add a
daring dash of well-cured blues, and R&B riffs, and you've cooked up the
tasty Los TexManiacs groove. Not to
say that this group's sound is for musical gourmets only… it is,
"hip music everyone can relate to,´ says leader
Max Baca of their Texas Mexican sound. Los
TexManiacs are a product of Baca’s wide-ranging experience touring and
recording with everyone from his father's family conjunto, Flaco Jimenenz, the
original Texas Tornados, Los Super Seven and even the Rolling Stones.
Featuring accordionist David Farías, conjunto tejano veteran bassist
Óscar García, and multi-instrumentalist Lorenzo Martínez on drums, Los
Texmaniacs breathe new life into the century-old music of the Texas Rio Grande
Valley. Based in San Antonio, Los
Texmaniacs won a Grammy for their 2009 Borders y Bailes album, have appeared on
television, and played live for audiences throughout the world. Don’t miss

It's August and I've been keeping busy these past
few months, especially March when I led a community mosaic project
in Lexington, KY. I had a fabulous experience leading
the mosaic marathon at the annual Society of American Mosaic Artists
Conference (SAMA).
In three days, about 100 conference attendees brought my
designs of goldfinches to life with Mexican smalti. I
slept little, ate little and played a lot! I had an
amazing support system of friends who were there every step of the
way. The mosaic triptych was donated to a local
charity, Lexington's not-for-profit organization, The
Nest: Center for Women, Children & Families. I
wrote a very detailed blog post
about my experience, if you're interested. There was also an
article posted to the online news web site, the Noozhawk.
Read it here.
Here are a few photos of the project and my experience. See
many more photos on my Flickr
page.

My Children's
Book
I have
completed 12 mosaics for my book and am almost finished with the
13th. I think there will be 14 full size mosaics all
together and one half size, so I'm getting close! My
original plan was to have the book go to print this summer, but there
have been some unexpected delays, including seven new commissions for
pet portraits (see below). I've completed two of them
and won't get back to the book until the rest are finished.
This may be a couple of months. So, I am looking forward to
having my book published sometime next year. I will keep you posted
in this newsletter as to when, and if you'd like a postcard sent to you
in the mail when the book is ready, send me an email here to be added to
my mailing list. Here are a couple of photos of the recent work
I've done on the book.
Pet Portraits
Here
are two of the seven pet portraits I've completed so
far. They are both 5x7" and made with stained glass. Cats
are my favorite animal to mosaic, but I am excited about the next five
portraits, which will all be dogs.

Other Artists
I Enjoy
Another local
artist I'd like to share is Fred
Calleri. When I see his art, I just go,
"ahhhh..." and fall into it deeply. There is
a Norman Rockwell quality to it, with his portrayals of the
everyday moments, but his style is distinctively his own. My
favorites of his tend to be the ones which include children or animals
or both! His is happy art and makes me just want to stay and
enjoy it for a long, long time.

Mosaic Portrait
Class With Carol Shelkin in Santa Barbara
I know this is
last minute, but my buddy Carol will be teaching at the Santa
Barbara School of Mosaic Art next week (August 7-9) and
there is still space available if you're interested. She is an
amazingly talented artist and so much fun! I took her class last
year and I can't recommend her enough. She will also be
teaching at the Institute
of Mosaic Art in Oakland, CA the following week (August
10-12) if that works better for you. Visit her web site
for more about Carol and her beautiful mosaics.
Thinking and
Beautiful Day by Carol
Shelkin
Thank you for
reading my newsletter and if you think others would be interested in
reading it, feel free to pass it on.
Warm regards, until next time,
Christine
